photobox slideshow problems
A few people have mentioned having problems using the ‘slideshow’ feature in photobox, such as Internet Explorer crashing entirely and closing down?

If this is the case then many apologies for the inconvenience, however unless it isn’t obvious – this is actually out of my hands as the photos / slideshow system are on Photobox’s site rather than my own.
I have some suggestions for resolving the issue, however.
- Try and reset / clear the cache on your internet browser.
Interet Explorer 6
Internet Explorer 7
Here are full instructions for this process- link
- Update your version of Flash to the latest version – link

- Lastly (and the one I recommend) – use a different internet browser – Firefox

After installing Firefox, you should have an additional icon your desktop (‘firefox’) – this is an alternative internet browser to Internet Explorer, but will not replace it so you can still use either one as you please. It is rather annoying having to do any of these things to be able to use their slideshow facility, and once again I can only apologise. If you have any problems with the above drop me message or leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to help you get it working.

new gallery / store

I have just setup a Photobox ‘ProGallery’ store for the displaying & purchasing of photos.
If you happen to use it, please leave feeback by email or leave a comment below this post as I’m keen to learn if is easy or hard to use. I personally found the Photobox site quite slow to use, but that may have been because I was accessing it at a peak time.

Paris
Took a short trip to Paris last week, beautiful place, you don’t need to try very to hard to find good photo opportunities.

HDR - Eifell Tower
This first shot uses a post-processing technique referred to as HDR (or High Dynamic Range) – you achieve this effect by taking 3 or more images that are under and overexposing the scene. When you combine them, you get a weird/interesting (and fake) looking image where a lot more of the dynamic range is available and exposed for, which you wouldn’t normally expect.
The rest of these are pretty predictable ‘touristy’ shots, enjoy!

Birds In Flight - shot in jpeg with incorrect whitebalance, doh!

Tour Eiffel, Eiffel Tower - you can

Bread and Roses - nice, but expensive!

Musée du Louvre

Louvre Tourists - they

Juggling Outside Notre Dame - lovely atmosphere at night

Seine - Lightning. Shame it was all

Raining in Paris - this looked far better when I was there

Quintessential French Man, in a park

Chickenhawk – Live At Leeds
Quality multi-faceted riff-based noise-monsters Chickenhawk took to centre stage, in the middle of the room, at around 8:30 last night as part of the ‘Live At Leeds‘ event, at The Library Pub in Leeds.
Very loud, and interesting / entertaining. These soothing minstrels produce a big sound, even with their unorthodox ‘drag all the gear into the middle of the room and play as loud as we can’ approach to playing live.

Chickenhawk - The Library - Live at Leeds
Unfortunately, being in the middle of the room meant there was very little ambient light hitting the band so I had to rely solely on the flash , and frequently using it in ‘2nd curtain sync‘ mode to achieve the warmer feel, with the streaks of light while also freezing the action.
For me, this technique is a bit hit and miss – but occasionally I get decent enough results.

These ‘contrasty’ colourful shots also make pretty good black and white conversions with the noise from the ISO adding to the effect, I think.

Skull Branded Pirates – Leeds Rios
Yarrgh. Tonight I attended a ‘pirate metal’ gig, that’s right; ‘pirates’ as in Jonny Depp / Orlando Bloom and ‘metal’ as in Metallica Iron Maiden.

Skull Branded Pirates - Leeds Rios - by chrisdearnleyphotography.com
I don’t really understand it as a concept, but the packed out Rios is testament to how popular this genre is.

The conditions weren’t great for photos, but they rarely are for live music! The venue has its lighting rig set up behind the stage, rather then pointing at the stage, which I find strange as it meant the performers are silhouetted, even to the naked eye, so external flash (Canon Speedlite 430 EX) was used, with a Sto-Fen diffuser. I deviated between pointing the flash directly at the perfomers, and angling it slightly to bounce the light off of surfaces in the room.

For the on-camera settings, I left the camera on manual for most of the gig and set the shutterspeed to 1/60 and waited, poised, for moments of pirate metal magic. I shot quite a few without the flash, relying only on the ambient light. They didn’t come out so well, but made reasonable black and white conversions.

sea monster?
Skull Branded Pirates were thoroughly entertaining, they even had a large sea monster on stage.
